Kevin W. Settles has been a research associate at the Institute for Parliamentarism Research (IParl) in Berlin since January 2022. He conducts research on questions of political representation, parliamentary practice and the digital transformation of political communication. At the same time, he works as a proofreading assistant for the Zeitschrift für Parlamentsfragen (ZParl) active.
His Master's thesis in the degree programme Parliamentary issues and civil society at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg focussed on the understanding of representation by Bundestags during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, he was already involved in the coordination of the research project WK-C19 which examined the constituency work of German MPs under pandemic conditions.
He is currently working together with Dr Nadin Fromm on studies on the role and civic image of local elected representatives as part of a qualitative teaching research project at the University of Kassel. He also teaches there in the elective module Qualitative research methods.
His research interests include theories of political representation, the dynamics of political communication under digital conditions, deliberative democratic theory and institutional innovations to strengthen the representational relationship between citizens and political actors.
